Shakespeare in the Park…what happens when Cinderella meets reality!
Apr 12th, 2011 by Viva

The 3rd Annual Shakespeare in the Park will be back at the Bandshell this summer performing “All’s Well That Ends Well,” and auditions are just one month away!

Shakespeare in the ParkAuditions will be held May 12, 13 & 14 at the Historic Holmes Theatre.  Actors needed! 6 men, 6 women. (Yep, it’s a small cast!) This rags-to-riches comedy centers around the life, love and fortunes of a young orphan, Helena & her marriage to the noble Bertram.

We’re going with a new idea this year, based on the Guthrie Theater’s performance of Macbeth this spring. We’re going to cut out anything in the script not based on the central story of Helena and Bertram’s disastrous love affair. (If that’s a good way to put it… hmmm… It’s kind of a one sided affair with Helena pursuing Bertam despite him despising her.) It will shorten the show, and make it a little easier for the audience to follow.

Please check out the Shakespeare in the Park Facebook page at www.facebook.com/dlshakespeare for pictures of this year’s show!

Performances will be: June 24, 25, 26 & July 1, 2, 3

For more information, please contact Nikki Caulfield  or call the Holmes Theatre Box Office at 218-844-7469.

Summer is here…at least at the DLCCC it is!
Apr 6th, 2011 by Viva

While we all readily anticipate the coming of summer, the current weather outside makes it looks as though it may take awhile. Have no fear though- we’ve got just the thing to get you in the right spirit….the DLCCC Summer Program Guide.

It’s your go-to guide for everything happening here this summer at the DLCCC & the Holmes Theatre. From baseball, soccer & The Rec to the DLCCC Day Camp, swim lessons & the annual Phil Hansen Football Kids Kamp, there’s guaranteed to be something for every child’s interest. We also have options the adults, ranging from Buddy Holly & Patsy Cline tribute shows to the 2nd Annual Bleacher’s Golf Scramble.

Find a copy in the Detroit Lakes Tribune TODAY & the Lake Area Press SATURDAY & get ready, because summer is right around the corner…

After all, it’s all about how you look at things. I look out my window right now and instead of fog, I envision baseball games on a perfect summer night, long walks on the beach & a glowing tan that lasts through the winter. (Glass half full? Yes, it sure is!)

Swimming lessons and instructions are not just for kids
Mar 29th, 2011 by Kim

We are all getting excited for the spring and summer weather to finally arrive! As we get ready for swimming in the lakes, many parents automatically wonder if they have signed their kids up for swim lessons. But what about lesson options for adults?

Private swim lessons and programs like Master’s Swimming are perfect opportunities for adults. Private lessons are great for adults who have never learned how to swim and want to add swimming to their fitness routine or just want a one-on-one skills brush up. The instructors work with each swimmer’s ability level and customize the time for them.

Master’s Swimming is a group program with designed workouts. Many swimmers who participate in this program are gearing up for a spring or summer triathlon and need someone to push them. Others are looking for technique work while they make swimming part of their fitness routine.

So whether you are brushing up on your basic swimming skills, training for a triathlon or literally getting your toes wet for the first time, we can work with you!

Next Master’s Program starts Wednesday, April 6 from 5:30-7:00 PM. Pre-register at the Front Desk.

Everyday Heroes
Mar 17th, 2011 by Viva

With Ann Reed performing her “Heroes” show tonight, I’ve stopped to takea a few moments to reflect on the woman heroes in my life.

In school I learned of many well-known women who made a difference and participated in change, such as Anne Frank, Jane Adams, Amelia Earhart and Rosa Parks, to name just a few.  Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s, young girls heard of many modern day women set to make a difference in our world, like Gloria Steinem, Sandra Day O’Connor, and Christa McAuliffe.  These women along with so many more have “cleared the path,” as Ann Reed puts it,  for the rest of us.  But for me, the everyday heroes in my life have had the most impact.  My Great Grandmother Anna who raised 14 children, dozens of grandchildren and countless great grandchildren, always “had time” for all of us and had a way of making each and everyone one of us feel as though we were the most important and always seem to know the right words at the right time, my Church Youth Leader Kathy Valan who spent endless hours sharing her triumphs and struggles in life with wide eyed middle and high school students, and my mom who has set the example of hard work and showed me the most important gift you can give is your time and the knowledge that I can do whatever I set my mind to.  Who has impacted your life?

I invite you to grab one of your heroes and join us for the  “Heroes” performance, tonight,  March 17th to celebrate her and all of the women that have impacted all of our lives.  It will be an evening filled with stories and wonderful music by some of Minnesota’s finest musicians, and of course Ann Reed herself.

Heroes Help You Believe You Can Spread Your Wings
Mar 16th, 2011 by Kim

When I think of the word “Hero” the phrase “role model” comes to mind and I have several role models.

Topping my list are my parents. They are retired teaches and are great examples of how we try to raise our kids. They always encouraged my sister, brother and I to get involved and to believe in ourselves. We took piano lessons, joined the choir, played in the band and played sports, each of us finding our own joys. When it came time to pick a college, they encouraged us to spread our wings and not go to the university in our community. It gave us one more chance to grow.

Also on my list would be many great teachers and coaches in my life. My 3rd grade teacher Mrs. Land, my speech teacher Mrs. Crane, my social teacher Mr. Hentges, my high school swim coach Mr. Chopp, my college track coaches Jan Berg and Craig Hougen, my internship supervisor Carol Howe-Veenstra and many more.

These people and many more helped influence me. Their encouragement helped me to dream and believe and get where I am today….they are my Heroes!

Mar 15th, 2011 by Viva

There are so many remarkable women in this world who have had a huge impact on society. It’s hard to pick  just one person to look up to and to strive to be like. While it’s important for everyone to be their own person, it’s so great that there have been people “to clear a path or light the flame,”  like Ann Reed wrote in her song, “Heroes.”

One of these remarkble people whom I draw inspiration from is Mother Teresa. It truly amazes me what a selfless, giving, caring, compassionate person she was. She led by example and transparency and lived a life that so many people from all over the world have admired and look up to.

If you Google Mother Teresa quotes, you see what a sharp & truly wonderful person she was. Wouldn’t it be great to have multiple pages of quotes that YOU said?! Here are just a couple of my favorites that I try to think of everyday:

“Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.”
“We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do.”
“Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.”

Reading these words just makes me want to smile & show others what an impact they have on my life. How hard is it really to give someone a compliment or to smile at a stranger or at someone you know when they’re having a bad day?! It really could make all the difference! They say a smile’s contagious, so my advice…pass it on & hope it spreads!

I’m excited to hear about other heroes that people have & to hear Ann Reed & other musicians tell stories and share songs of so many women who have shown “that you do what’s right by your heart and soul” and that “if you make the effort you cannot fail.” See you Thursday for “Heroes” as we celebrate those women who have made an impact on your life!

Heroes help show the way
Mar 14th, 2011 by Viva

I first heard of Ann Reed about 15 years ago when a friend dragged my husband and me to a concert.   Ann was performing in a funky little Unitarian Church in Rochester and neither Mike nor I were very hip on going, but we were guests and so we went.  Ann opened her concert in her laid-back style with a bit of monologue and then she started singing in her rich alto voice and we were hooked.  One song in particular struck a chord – “Heroes”.  It’s a song Ann wrote about all those women in history who have done amazing things –famous women like Anne Frank, Susan B. Anthony, Harriet Tubman and so many more, but also those women in your own life who are heroes to you – perhaps your mom, grandma, teacher or neighbor.

Each time I hear “Heroes” I’m so touched by all the women in my life who (as Ann sings) have “shown me the way.”  My mom, my aunts, my grandma, my neighbor Anna Walvatne, college mentor Doris Huseboe, and many other women who have set such a great example and taken the time to “clear a path or light a flame.”   Another favorite line from the song is “It’s the imperfections that make us whole.”  So true!

Now Ann Reed has created a theatrical production of “Heroes” and it will be at the Holmes on Thursday, March 17.  This production showcases Ann Reed and some of Minnesota’s finest musicians:   Dan Chouinard, Aimee Bryant, Leslie Ball, Joan Griffith, Thomasina Petrus, Denise Tabet plus a local women’s chorus featuring DL area women (if you want to be in the choir, call the theatre at 844-7469).  It’ll be a night of great story and song.

I hope you can join us on Thursday, March 17 to celebrate heroes of all shapes and sizes.  And, take a moment today to think about (or even better call up and thank) someone who is a hero to you.

Jobs, kids, friends, hobbies, meetings, etc.  Time is one of the biggest reasons for not being able to get your workout in. We here at the DLCCC know you are busy and we want to help you. Soon, you’ll be able to use your lunch break to get your workout in and free up your evening or morning for all the other activities that fill up your calendar.

Starting March 15th we will start a group workout called Lunch Express on Tuesdays and Fridays from 12:00-12:45 pm. This fast and effective class combines short bursts of exercises that incorporate cardio, strength, abs and stretching, all into a time that will fit into your busy schedule.

The class will be lead by Personal Trainer Sallie Eikren and veteran Fitness Instructor Bobby Smith. You can think of it as sports practice meets boot camp meets group exercise. You don’t have to worry about keeping a beat to music or learning any special equipment. All we need is you and your lunch break. They will lead you through sets of some traditional exercises that will work your core and increase your cardio endurance with each class. Don’t forget to tell a co-worker and bring them with. Make it your time at noon on March 15th. See you there!

The DLCCC’s yoga instructors Amy Lundberg, Jeanette Larson and Jess Stuewe will team up to teach this class. The workouts will be easy to follow and students will leave prepared to try any DLCCC yoga class.

Other yoga classes include at the DLCCC include:

Noon Yoga

Instructed by Amy Lundberg

 ”Yoga Sport”
Instructed by Jess Stuewe
Wednesdays, 7-8 p.m.

Friday Morning Yoga
Instructed by Jeanette Larson
Fridays, 9-10:20 a.m.

For more information on each of these classes, visit www.dlccc.org.

Still not sure if yoga is right for you? Read the following article written by Friday Morning Yoga instructor, Jeanette Larson:

What is yoga? The word itself means to unite or join, form a yoke or union as it harmonizes the body, breath, mind and spirit. In many yoga classes, students are encouraged to pay close attention to the breath, slowing and lengthening their breathing, this in turn settles the mind and prepares the body for a number of different asanas or poses. These poses help enliven and stretch the body.

One of the most common mental blocks for beginners is the belief that he or she is not flexible enough for yoga, this is simply not true, with yoga you start from where you are, there is no other possible place to begin, the main thing is to start! Yoga is an open listening to, and a personal response, from your own body.  Finding the quietness that lies within yourself is calming, soothing and life enhancing.

Many students of yoga report that they sleep better, feel more centered and enjoy their lives more as they learn and practice all that yoga has to offer.

Behind the “scenes” with artist Keri Noble
Dec 2nd, 2009 by Viva

Keri Noble’s Holiday Show is coming up right here at the Historic Holmes Theatre this Saturday, December 5 at 7:30 p.m. By now, hopefully you feel like you’ve got a pretty good idea of what to expect when you come to this great holiday show…

Keri Noble’s concert will combine R&B, gospel, pop and rock and will feature original songs including “Winter Comes Again,” “Everything I Want for Christmas,” “Santa, You Owe Me,” and inspiring versions of Christmas favorites like “Auld Lang Syne,” and Joni Mitchell’s  “River.”  The song “Emily” was featured on the hit show “Grey’s Anatomy.” Kelly Clarkson covered Noble’s “If No One Will Listen” on her March ’09 album, “All I Ever Wanted.” Critics have called Noble’s music “utterly gorgeous” and argued over whether she sounded more like Sarah McLachlan or Norah Jones.

And believe me…these are all great reasons why you should come to her concert on Saturday night! BUT there is a lot more to know about Keri Noble! In Keri’s personal blog on her website, www.kerinoble.com, she talks about everything from her advice on achieving your dreams to being known as “the cat lady!” It’s all on Keri’s journal. For a preview, check out some the interesting quotes below!

“…if no one has EVER told you before…please believe me when i say…the most ordinary people do extraordinary things.”

“i began to blow dry my hair. 5 minutes in, i blew a fuse. really????? at that point, laurie and i broke down laughing. what else can you do?”

“I’m back in my parent’s house. I’m in a twin bed. I’m 33 years old. I have a king-sized, gorgeous bed at home in Minnesota, and i’ve driven 12 hours to fall asleep in a twin bed.”

“just saw myself on wikipedia. i met someone today who didn’t know my music, and after i gave him a copy of my latest cd, i thought maybe i’d actually google myself to see what someone would find.

the reason i haven’t done this before is very clear to me…i don’t really want to know how other people, who don’t really know me, perceive me. it’s weird and unnatural. like eavesdropping on a conversation about yourself that you were never meant to hear. which brings me to wikipedia…her dad’s a pastor… blah, blah, blah…grew up in Detroit…blah, blah, blah…Currently, Noble resides in Minneapolis with her cat, Akiko”…HOLD ON!!!!!! I’m the cat lady? really?”

To go behind the scenes with Keri Noble, check out her blog on myspace.

To see her live, all the charm and funny anecdotes include, come to Keri’s show on Saturday at the Historic Holmes Theatre. Tickets are $22 for adults and $11 for students. Call 218-844-SHOW, buy online at www.dlccc.org or visit the Historic Holmes Theatre Box Office at 806 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes.

Helpful hints for staying trim and fit this Holiday Season
Nov 23rd, 2009 by Viva

Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy…top it all off with a slice of Grandma’s famous pumpkin pie! According to some research, the average Thanksgiving meal is a whopping 3,000 calories. We’re entering that time of year where temptations are everywhere, and of course, enjoying Holiday treats is part of celebrating the season. But there are some clever ways to avoid really packing on the pounds this holiday season.

Let’s start with some tips from “Today” that gives some great tips for cutting down your portion sizes so you don’t have to pass up on any of your holiday favorites…

http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/22151942/

Another strategy is to burn off extra calories with exercise. This nifty tool doesn’t have turkey and stuffing as an option, but is great for figuring out how much exercise it takes to burn off some of your favorite foods.

Giving can benefit you and your community!
Nov 17th, 2009 by Viva
Give to the Max Day!

Give to the Max Day!

“‘Tis the season!” The holiday season is nearly here and the end of the year is quickly approaching. It’s that time of year when the spirit of giving is heavy in the air! But did you know that catching the “giving bug” is not only beneficial to your community, but it can also benefit your health and happiness!?

Giving has been shown to slow the aging process, increase one’s overall sense of well-being, alleviate chronic pain, strengthen the immune system and even reduce depression. Those who give money to charity have been proven to be happier with life overall. A phenomen known as a “helpers’ high” which is similar to a “runners’ high,” has even been documented! It’s a kind of euphoria that comes about when helping others—a warm glow in the chest and a sense of vitality that comes from being simultaneously energized and calm.

Want to catch the “helpers’ high?” Today, November 17, is Give to the Max Day and your chance to help out the DLCCC and “Give to the max” at a new website, www.givemn.org.

GiveMN allows donors to find and support non-profit organizations like the DLCCC, that match their philanthropic goals and easily keep track of their donations in a single online location. GiveMN is the first giving-site focused specifically on nonprofits in a single state, but donors can also access all registered United States 501 (c) (3) organizations.

“Give to the Max Day” is a giving stimulus plan created to increase giving to non profits across Minnesota. The goal is to raise as much money as possible for Minnesota charities in 24 hours.  The Saint Paul Foundation, Minneapolis Foundation and Bush Foundation have committed $500,000 in matching contributions to support community needs in Minnesota and to cover transaction fees so that 100% of all donations go to the nonprofit organizations.

Every donation made during Give to the Max Day, which kicked off today at 8 a.m. today (November 17) and will run until tomorrow (November 18) at 8 a.m., will receive a portion of the $500,000 match. The three nonprofits that receive donations from the most individual donors will receive cash prizes: $5,000 for first prize, $2,500 for second, and $1,000 for third.

Donations made to the DLCCC will be used to support youth programming such as the “Mosaic Mania” art outreach program and daytime school shows, or will be used to provide scholarships so that underprivileged youth, families and individuals may attend shows, use the fitness and aquatic center and participate in DLCCC programs such as Sunfish Swim Team, Youth Basketball, the DLCCC After School Program and more.

To see a video on how your donation can help us provide arts and fitness programming in this region, click on the link below…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8L-VrTe3xzI

Oct 26th, 2009 by Viva

Things were hopping at the DLCCC on Saturday, October 24. The center was free and open to the public and many families from the community came in to play in the pool and gym, and actually experience art!

In the day and age of video games, internet and television, it was wonderful to see so many youth taking part in good ol’  fashioned, use-your-imagination, FUN!

Thank you to all the artists from the community who helped facilitate these art projects. It was amazing to see the looks of joy on the kids’ faces when they found out they got to create their own art by dipping their hands in a bucket of paint, swirling their favorite colors around in a glass ornament, using a kitchen sponge to make a fish print and so much more! In fact as one little boy sat down to do one of the activties he expressed his excitment about art day, “This is the best activity I’ve ever done!”

The day was topped off with a performance of “The Jungle Book” in the theatre. Although we can all appreciate Disney’s ability to take this show into one of the most-beloved children’s movies of all time, there was something special about seeing it live on the theatre stage.

Overall, it was a great day! But inspiring creativity in children doesn’t have to stop with one special art day. Here are some ideas for inspiring creativity in your child, courtesy of Crayola.

Tips for Raising Creative Kids
From www.crayola.com

1. Provide children with both planned craft projects and spontaneous, single art explorations they can do on their own. Create an Art Center in your kitchen or family room so your kids can creatively express themselves.

2. Encourage children to try new, unique ways of doing things. Don’t expect their artwork to look like samples others have made. Encourage kids to come up with their own ways to do crafts. Ask, “I wonder what would happen if…” to inspire their imagination.

3. Build kids’ confidence in their own creative abilities. If they ask you to “make it for them,” reply that you’d love to see what they create. Don’t expect kids to create artwork that looks like an adult’s. Children’s fresh and unique styles should be valued.4. Emphasize the enjoyment and the “process” of creating art, more than the results. The aesthetic qualities of a young child’s work are not as important as the process used to create them.5. Celebrate your children’s creativity by displaying their art.

Trey is the real deal!
Oct 9th, 2009 by Viva

Trey Hensley may be only 19, but he can play classic country with the best of ‘em! Last night he played tunes from his two albums, some of his favorites and even took requests from the audience! Trey played everything from classic songs by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and even stepped outside his genre when he did his own take on a Beatles song, which he played for the first time on stage right here in Detroit Lakes!

This down to earth guy even joined us at the Pre-Party in the Ballroom! We wish him happy trails as he continues in his career as a country music artist.

Trey Hensley Tonight!
Oct 8th, 2009 by Viva

Trey BW

Hopefully you got to hear Trey Hensley perform live on “the Wild Morning Show” on Wild 104 and “Hodgepodge” on KDLM this morning. And if you did, I bet you’ll agree that we will definitely be seeing a lot more of this guy in the world of country music! I really think tonight is our chance to be able to say a few years down the road, “I saw Trey Hensley way back before he was famous!”

Trey’s an amazingly smooth, deep voice with a country twang. He just turned 19, but he got musical talent well beyond his years. Trey grew up in a small town in Tennessee, “about the size of Detroit Lakes,” he says. He fostered a love of country music after listening to the classic country artists with his Grandparents as a kid. He picked up a guitar when he was just 10 years old and was an instant phenom! And he even writes some of his own music!

We hope to see you at the show tonight at 7:30 p.m! (Come early for some beer and BBQ in the Holmes Ballroom starting at 6 p.m. and register for your chance to win WE Fest Tickets.) It’s gonna be a great show tonight, but you don’t have to take our word for it…Take from these guys who know a thing or two about country music! (Follow the link below to hear what some famous country music folk have said about Trey!)

“Scenes” from the Kusun Ensemble
Oct 2nd, 2009 by Viva

What a show! The 09-10 Season is off to a great start after an astounding performance from the Kusun Ensemble last night. You could almost picture yourself in the middle of a village in Africa listening and watching this talented group of musicians and dancers who gave the audience an exciting introduction into African culture. We even got to try some delicious African kabobs, courtesy of a wonderful group of student volunteers from MSUM.

Holmes Theatre 2009-2010 Season Kicks Off with the Kusun Ensemble!
Oct 1st, 2009 by Viva

We are so excited to kick of the 2009-2010 Holmes Theatre Season tonight with the Kusun Ensemble. Our motto for the year is “Step Inside and See the World” and we really believe that this show is a true example of that! This afternoon’s  daytime show wowed hundreds of school kids and adults with colorful costmes, innovative rhythms and electrifying dances! We hope you’ll join us tonight at 7:30 for the public performance!

The Kusun Ensemble’s mission is to share a bit of African Culture with the world. The members of the group make their home in Ghana, West Africa, where music and dance are part of every day life. At work, music is one of the tools used to get the job done. Many jobs are physically demanding, and the music provides a driving force, as well as enhances cooperation and productivity.

When it comes to cooking, music is one of the ingredients. Rhythm is used while stirring, beating or pounding the ingredients to their proper texture. Singing is also a regular part of preparing every meal. (You will even get a chance to try some African food at tonight’s show if you make a visit to our concessions stand!)

When it comes to games, music is one of the toys. Many African games are based in rhythm, dance and song. Clapping, stomping, jumping and dance is a common element of children’s games found in Africa. Before going out for team sports, you will find song and rhythm in the locker rooms, building their team morale.

When it comes to healing, music plays a part in the cure. The Wolomor (High Priest) whom people go to for medical council, uses drumming, dancing and songs in a ritual to create healing. In addition to music used for rituals, many of us know through our own experience the uplifting and healing qualities music can have on our body and mind.

We have Africa to thank for bringing so much music and culture to America and the world over the years, and we have the Kusun Ensemble to thank for bringing this right here to Detroit Lakes. The Kusun Ensemble has been in Detroit Lakes for the past couple of days and their leader, Tettey recorded this special message for all of you! They’re eager to share their dance and music this evening and to start off our 2009-2010 season with a bang!

Tettey\’s Special Invite
